Archer votes for Ocho Rios — Moon Palace Resort

Why Ocho Rios over Montego Bay. Several of us have already stayed in Montego Bay, so a reunion in a different parish feels like a trip rather than a repeat. St. Ann was one of the parishes Hurricane Melissa largely spared, and its two big family resorts never closed. The best mixed-age attractions on the island (Dunn's River Falls, Dolphin Cove, Mystic Mountain, the Blue Hole, Chukka's adventure hub) are all within 15 minutes of the resort instead of a 2 hour day trip from Montego Bay.

What we give up. About 1.5 to 2 hours of coach time each way from Sangster. For a 4 night trip that is half a day, and it needs 2 to 3 chartered coaches. The resort's group department normally arranges these, and the cost should be in the per-person price.

01Deciding factors, in order

  • Activities within 30 minutes for toddlers through elders.
  • Family friendly. A resort rated and equipped for every age, infants to elders: kids’ club and teen space, accessible rooms and walkable grounds, on-site medical, and a group desk used to multigenerational blocks. Moon Palace is well rated on all of it.
  • One resort for everyone. A 30 to 45 room block over Easter weekend plus a private space for the Easter Sunday dinner.
  • Budget. Moon Palace fits inside the $2,500 per person, 13-month plan, with coach transfers and group terms included.
  • Travel. 1.5 to 2 h by coach from Sangster for 60 to 90 people (120 max); Ian Fleming airport near Ocho Rios only has a daily Miami flight.
  • Melissa recovery. Open and fully operating since October 2025, nothing still being rebuilt.

On the main Ocho Rios bay and walkable to town, which matters when 60 to 90 people will not all want to move as one unit. Guests were back in their rooms the day after Melissa. Two ballrooms (9,472 and 6,579 sq ft) mean the whole family eats Easter dinner under one roof, and the Palace group desk is used to blocks this size, with complimentary rooms that scale with the block. For the kids: FlowRider surf simulator, Playroom kids' club, Wired teen lounge and several pools. Public rates run roughly $300 to $480 per room per night; the group rate will be lower.

03Ask of the committee

  • Vote on the town on 11-03. The resort can follow once a written quote is in (milestone M06 "Location selected" is 2027-01-31).
  • Request a group quote from Moon Palace for Thu 2028-04-13 to Mon 2028-04-17, 30 to 45 rooms, itemising rate, free-room ratio, deposit schedule, dinner space and coach transfers.

Resort statuses and rates are from public reporting on 2026-10-28; confirm with the group desk before the resort vote.

AI-2026-10-06-04 · Payment-plan options

One sign-up on the-folkes.org. Pay in full, in 13 monthly drafts, or finance it. The committee pays the resort.

Working model: about $2,500 per person (placeholder until quotes are in), 13 months, February 2027 to February 2028. Every household pays a deposit up front to hold its seats, then picks how to pay the rest. Fees and interest depend on the payment method each attendee chooses.

01The three ways to pay

  • Pay in full. Deposit, then the balance by the due date. Bank debit about 0.8% (capped at $5); card 2.9% + 30¢.
  • 13 monthly drafts. Deposit up front, then auto-draft on the 1st, February 2027 to February 2028. About $25 per person on bank debit, about $75 on a card. No interest.
  • Klarna or Affirm. The lender pays the committee in full at checkout and drafts the family. 0 to 36% APR to the family, set by the lender. Merchant fee about 6%.
  • 3% service fee on the plan price covers processing. Bank debit is cheapest, so it is the default we push.

02How it runs

  • Enrollment form on the-folkes.org (tracker REG-22): household, number of people, payment choice, deposit paid at sign-up.
  • Stripe behind it: cards, bank debit, Klarna and Affirm in one checkout; auto-draft, reminders and failed-payment retries built in.
  • Registration and payments dashboard: who has enrolled, who has paid, who is behind, visible to the committee.
  • Committee pays the resort group desk on its contract dates: deposit at signing, balance 30 to 60 days before 2028-04-13. The last family draft clears 2028-02-01.
  • Archer has run Stripe collections before. A rough working draft will be up before 11-03.

03What the committee needs to settle

  • Agree this structure: the committee collects, the resort is paid from the committee account.
  • Approve the 3% service fee and the deposit amount per seat.
  • Bank account access for more than one planner (AI-02) before the plan launches in February 2027.
  • Archer brings the working draft and real costs by 2026-12-20 (REG-03), ahead of the amount-and-terms approval (M05, 2027-01-08).

Fallbacks checked: a group travel advisor's plan (demo requested, likely not needed) and WeTravel, a hosted group-payments page at about 1% + 30¢. Lender rates and processing fees are from public pages on 2026-10-28; confirm at launch.

AI-2026-10-06-05 · Two activity ideas

One day on the water, one day inland, Kingston after dark

Dolphin Cove, Dunn's River and Mystic Mountain sit within a few hundred metres of each other, under a mile from the resort, so they are one stop, not two days. The trip has three full days (Fri, Sat, Easter Sunday) between arrival and departure.

01Friday: coast-hopping catamaran

A private motor catamaran for the whole family on the first full morning, to get everyone loose. Boats for 60, 100 and 120 sail from Mahogany Beach. Book a 5 to 6 hour route: about an hour at Dolphin Cove for stingrays and snorkeling (dolphins as an add-on), then west past Dunn's River and the SS Kathryn reef to Runaway Bay for a beach lunch, or east past Laughing Waters to James Bond Beach at Oracabessa. Open bar and music on the way back.

No operator advertises a boat landing at Dolphin Cove; it has to be arranged with the park and the charter. If they decline, Dolphin Cove becomes a Thursday walk-in and the boat goes straight to the coast stops. Roughly $40 to $70 per person for a full boat plus Dolphin Cove admission.

02"The snack" Friday night in Kingston, young adults optional

After the catamaran docks on Friday afternoon, the young adults who want to keep going take a coach into Kingston for the night. Kingston is about 1 h 15 min on the Edward Seaga Highway. Start at Tracks and Records (Usain Bolt's venue), then a dancehall or reggae session, and roll back to the resort by 2 am. It sits on Friday so it never clashes with Good Hope on Saturday, and anyone who sleeps in on Saturday still makes the coaches.

Hire a 15-seat Sprinter-style van or a 25-seat coaster from a licensed operator, roughly $25 to $45 per seat return; private nightclub tours with hotel pickup start around $60 per person. Kingston Dub Club runs Sunday nights, so it is out; check Tracks and Records' Friday programme before booking.

03Saturday: Chukka Good Hope Estate, Trelawny

An 18th-century estate on the edge of Cockpit Country, 1 h 15 min west, so the family crosses into another parish and sees the interior. One ticket covers ziplines, Martha Brae river tubing and bamboo rafting, dune buggies, an Appleton rum tasting for adults, a kids' pool with waterslide, and lunch. Everyone from 6 to 80 has something to do on one site, and Chukka handles groups of cruise-ship size. About $150 to $170 per person.

Alternatives: Yaaman Adventure Park, 10 minutes east, if ATV mud buggies are the priority (drivers 18+). Blue Hole and White River tubing, 20 minutes inland, cheapest and most spectacular but done in waves of 20 to 30.

AI-2026-10-06-06 · Wardrobe & merch direction

Names-led merch, no new logo. All-white for one evening.

The 2028 merch carries the family name and the family-branch names, the lines of the family tree the app already holds, as the design itself: a clean type treatment, one colour, every shirt personalised by branch. No new reunion logo. If the family wants a mark on it, the existing family mark goes on as a small tag.

01Why names over a logo

  • No logo round. A new logo needs a brief, a designer, and an approval cycle before the Save the Date (milestone M08, theme selected, is 2027-02-28). Names need none of that.
  • Personal by branch. Each household sees its own line on the shirt, and the branches read as one family in a group photo.
  • Recognition. The name is what the family already knows; a logo would be new to everyone the day it lands.

02The all-white moment

Keep the all-white wardrobe to one evening, Easter Sunday dinner, so it is a photo moment and not a packing list for five days. The reunion merch is worn on the activity days.

03Ask of the committee

  • Decide names-led vs logo-led on 11-03. That is the only decision needed now.
  • Colours, cut, supplier and the order follow the theme (M08) and the headcount; Faith or a designer can set the type treatment then.
AI-2026-10-06-08 · Meeting cadence

Strictly monthly. Working groups carry the push stretches.

One whole-group meeting a month on the regular first Tuesday, and no added every-other-Tuesday meetings. The push stretches the tracker marks (payment-plan setup Dec 2026 to Jan 2027, launch Jul to Oct 2027, final Jan to Feb 2028) are handled by working groups that meet as they need to and report by email before the monthly call.

01Why

  • Working groups move faster than a whole-group call: website and app, registration and payments, governance, events, each with one owner.
  • The attendance policy best fits one date a month. Completed items and preferences reach the facilitator 2 business days before; one send-by date a month is optimal & workable for any async members.

03Ask of the committee

  • Confirm monthly; drop the added meetings from the Meeting Schedule tab (GOV-05, GOV-24) so the tracker matches.
  • The Tuesday 9:00 to 10:30 ET time stays by the 3/1 vote. Archer attends asynchronously under the attendance policy.
AI-2026-10-06-02 · AI-2026-10-06-14 · Bank access & auto-import

Two planners on the account now. The app reads it only with written consent.

Today only Ian can move money, which is why the October reimbursements came out of his pocket. From February 2027 the payment plan will put family money through the committee account every month, so access has to be fixed before then. Separately, the app’s assets dashboard should see the account only when all four planners have said yes in writing to what is shared and how.

01Bank access (AI-02)

  • Two authorised signers. Ian (treasurer role) plus one more planner, so reimbursements and vendor payments never wait on one person.
  • Read access for the rest. Read-only online-banking logins for the other planners, or a monthly statement export to the committee Drive if the bank cannot do read-only users.
  • Two approvals above a line. Any payment over an agreed amount (proposal: $500) is approved by both signers in writing before it goes out.
  • Booking the change. Ian books the bank appointment; both signers attend with ID and the committee’s account paperwork. Most banks want this in a branch.

02Auto-import into the app (AI-14)

Monthly CSV upload
Later
Read-only bank link
Who sees it
Planners only
Before any link
Written consent × 4
  • Until consent: CSV. The treasurer exports the month’s transactions from the bank and uploads the file to the assets dashboard. Nothing connects to the bank, nothing is stored but the rows in the file.
  • What a bank link means. A read-only connection through a bank-data provider: the app never holds the bank login, it receives balances and transactions only, it cannot move money, and the person who approved the link can switch it off at the bank at any time.
  • What consent covers. One short note every planner signs: what is shared (balances, transactions), who can see it (planners only), where it lives (the app’s database on our server, encrypted at rest, backed up nightly), and that any planner can ask for the link to be removed.
  • Security review first. Before any link, Archer writes up the provider’s data-sharing terms, what the app stores, who can see it and how it is revoked, and sends it to the planners. No link until that is read and agreed.

03Ask of the committee

  • Pick the second signer on 11-03 and agree the two-approval line; Ian books the bank appointment. Target: access fixed well before the first family draft on 2027-02-01.
  • Agree CSV now, bank link later. Decide on the link at the December meeting after the written security review.

Written 2026-10-29. Bank procedures vary; confirm the signer and read-only options with the committee’s bank.

AI-2026-10-06-15 · Family Wall migration

Family Wall is not renewed. Everything on it now lives on the-folkes.org.

The renewal was stopped before the 2026-10-20 date and the full export was imported into the app on 2026-10-20 with the original dates, authors and comments kept. The family moved over on 2026-10-21. The web app is the home now; the iPhone app is being refined and prepared for its App Store (TestFlight) release so the full cutover can follow.

  • Birthday wishes became birthday cards on each person's profile, and the birth dates feed the app's birthday reminders.
  • A few members' uploads were not in the export (about 22 of 519 files). If you still have photos you posted to Family Wall, send them to Archer and they are added without touching anything else.

02Ask of the committee

  • Nothing to decide. Use the-folkes.org as the family home from now on and send Archer anything you notice missing.
  • Launch event (AI-16): pick one of the two proposed Sunday dates so the family unveiling can be scheduled.

AI-2026-10-06-13 · App modules & investment ideas

Investment Ideas works. I want your feedback before anyone is asked to use it.

Of the module work from 10-06, the Investment Ideas module is fixed and running on the-folkes.org (Assets & Investments → Investment Ideas). Still to do on this item: connect SimpleFIN (read-only bank and brokerage feeds) to the Assets sub-module, which depends on the bank-access decision in item 06; then the smaller asks (profile message button, admin blast, add-person on the tree, RSVP check-in) and the native iPhone app.

01How Investment Ideas works today

  • One chat per idea. You pitch an idea in a few sentences (a side business, a rental, a stock thesis, backing someone's venture). An AI coach replies like a blunt but fair investor: a one-line verdict, what is missing or breaks, one or two questions that would raise the score, and what is working. It uses web search and cites sources.
  • A scorecard after every turn. Six criteria, each 0 to 5: problem or opportunity, business model, market and scale, edge and feasibility, return versus leaving the money in an index fund, and risk awareness. Each shows why it scored that way and what would raise it, with a readiness bar.
  • Checkpoints before the idea can go further. An idea only unlocks the next stage, the pitch deck, when the server says it is ready: at least 20 of 30 overall, business model at least 3, no criterion below 2, and no hard-stop flag (illegal schemes, scam patterns, or capital clearly beyond the family's means with no plan to raise it). Until then the coach keeps pushing on the money mechanism: who pays, how much, what it costs to deliver, what happens at ten times the size.
  • The deck is earned, not written by the AI. When the gate passes, the site builds a fixed 10-slide pitch (thesis, problem, solution, business model, market, edge, capital and opportunity cost, risks and walk-away point, bear/base/bull returns, break-even and the cheapest next test) from structured content, so nothing the AI writes can run on the site. Finished pitches go on a family board for reactions and comments. The deck stage and the board are the next phase of the build; the coach and scorecard are live.
  • Capped so it cannot run away. Its own API key, 13 prompts per person per day, a $10 a month family budget, 1,500 characters per message. Admins can read idea chats and the screen says so.

02My concern, honestly

It works, and the structure is sound. But the process feels a little proprietary: a structured conversation with an AI that has to be satisfied before you can move on. I am not sure the planners, or anyone in the family, would take the time to use it as it stands. I would rather hear what you want this to be before I polish it further.

03Ask of the committee

  • Open it on the-folkes.org, start one idea (real or made up), and tell me how it felt: too much, about right, or not worth it.
  • Tell me what you would want this module to look like. Three shapes to react to: (a) the full coach as built; (b) a lighter version, five questions answered once and scored, then a simple pitch page; (c) a plain family ideas board with comments and no AI at all. Mixes welcome.
  • Design inspiration: if there is an app, a form or a conversation that made you want to share an idea, name it.

Status 2026-10-29: Investment Ideas coach and scorecard live on the-folkes.org; deck stage next; SimpleFIN for the Assets sub-module pending item 06; remaining 10-06 asks and the iPhone release after that.
